Virtual Circuit -- FAQ and Help [Written by Diane M. Whisnant]
1. What if my internet service provider doesn't provide me with my own web space?
Check out this free web space provider:
Yahoo http://www.yahoo.com
Bob Rude has used Yahoo and offers these helpful suggestions:
"First thing, to use this your computer has to take cookies (a small file that the
host site leaves on your computer to keep track of your visits). Normally I have
mine set to automatically refuse all cookies. I change my settings to change my
entries, then I change it back. To change your settings in Explorer, go to View >
Internet Options > Advanced, scroll down to cookies. I use "prompt before accepting
cookies," then click on apply. When in Yahoo, everytime a security alert box pops
up asking you to allow this web site to put info on your computer, click yes. Next,
go to the Yahoo site. Scroll down to More Yahoos > Publishing > Home Pages > Yahoo
Page Wizards > Photo Page. Just follow the easy instructions. It doesn't take long;
remember to add it to your list of Favorites. If you have any questions, just email
Bob at bbbobr@avalon.net
(If any of you use and recommend others, let me know and I'll add them here.)
2. What if I've never used my web space or computer html code before?
The main thing you need to learn about your web space to be in this circuit is how
to upload files to it. Once you learn that process, we have forms provided here to
help you cover the rest (see below).
If you're new to using your AOL web space, click here
for additional information.
If you're new to using your web space and do not have AOL, click
here for additional information.
3. The size of the photos is so small on my monitor. Can I make them larger?
Yes, this is how Diane does it on her PC:
First close all applications you may have open, leaving only your desktop open.
On your desktop, click Start, choose Settings, then choose Control Panel.
On the Control Panel screen, double-click on Display.
On the Display Properties screen, choose the Settings tab by clicking on it.
Near the lower right, see the Screen Area bar, where you can make it Less or More.
Put your cursor on the moveable bar there and move it left until you have 800 x 600
(on my machine, the numbers appear automatically when I move the bar).
(I normally have mine set on 1024 x 768 so I can see more of a page at a time, which
is why everything also looks smaller.) Then hit OK.
Click OK again if you want to go ahead and resize your desktop.
Click Yes if you want to keep this setting. Then close all windows to return to your
desktop. View the photos and see how that works for you.
(Then after I've viewed and scored the entries, I change the setting back.)
Forms/Shell Documents that may be used for our circuit:
A. Email form for sending out scores and comments:
neutrino.physics.iastate.edu/n4c/virtshel.html
(Copy and paste this shell document into the body of your email message, moving or
removing the unnecessary data once there.)
B. Entry shell document, with html code, used to view your images if you want titles or
your name listed on your web site:
neutrino.physics.iastate.edu/n4c/virttitl.html
(If you want to add a title or other wording to your image pages, you need to upload
both a shell document and the image for each entry. If you don't want to add any
words, you may simply upload your photos only.)
Copy and paste this shell document into a word processing file where you can use .htm
files (for some reason, I seem to have to use Notepad for this instead of Word; in an
earlier version, I used Word). Then make your changes and save it with your own name,
like "entry1.htm"
Then "save as" to this new document to make "entry2.htm"
Do use the same name each month for your shell documents so the link on our home page
will be right. If you aren't using the shell documents, please use the same file name
each time for photo#1 and the same other file name for photo#2 when you upload them.
Notice on my entries how this looks. The first title entered appears in the very top
line of the web page screen, as the web page title (sometimes a blue area). The second
title appears in the body of the web page. If you don't want it in both places, delete
one of them from the shell document. Also, add your name and correct year for the
copyright line, if you choose to use it. As for the height and width numbers, these
may change each time if I have cropped my image to less than its original 1024x768.
The height and width numbers take a regular 1024x768 and convert it to 400x300, which
satisfies our size requirements. (If your photo is a vertical, you need to reverse the
numbers since the first number is the width.) If I have a different sized or pro-
portioned--no longer a 3-to-4 ratio--photo file, my conversion numbers would have to
change accordingly. If your photo file happens to already be the correct size of 400
or less each way, you don't even need the height and width numbers in your shell document
because you aren't changing the original from the viewed image size.
If you can't get your shell document to work, just let me know. I can look at it from
my machine, once you've uploaded it to the web, and try to help you.
